LINCOLN — The World-Herald's Wilson Moore is handing out his Husker Report Card, assessing Nebraska's performance in several areas. Here are the grades coming out of the Huskers' win over Wisconsin. Emmett Johnson was the speed back Nebraska needed him to be as slipped into space and past would-be tacklers. The redshirt sophomore was a receiving threat out of the backfield and was rarely taken to the ground by the first defender to meet him on a play. He set career highs in rushing yards and all-purpose yards. Dante Dowdell scored untouched on a 12-yard run in the first half and tacked on a plunge from the goal line. GRADE: A Nebraska didn’t come out with the most ambitious game plan, but Dylan Raiola executed it. The quarterback was accurate and efficient, particularly over the middle of the field. He didn’t often push the ball downfield, but he took what the Wisconsin defense gave him, forcing little and avoiding negative plays. GRADE: B Shaky tackling, allowing Wisconsin to break off the occasional chunk play, blemished an otherwise solid night for Nebraska in the trenches. The Badgers struggled to maintain drives, and two of the game’s pivotal plays were NU run stops: a Nash Hutmacher forced fumble that set up a field goal late in the first half and John Bullock stuffing Tawee Walker on fourth down in NU territory in the third quarter. GRADE: B Like his counterpart on the opposite sideline, Braedyn Locke was solid within a conservative attack. He took care of the ball and hit receivers when they were open. Nebraska, like in the running game, didn’t do itself any favors with its tackling — especially in the secondary. A 58-yard bomb to Vinny Anthony II gave Wisconsin a quick touchdown it needed for a potential comeback attempt. GRADE: C Barney gave the Huskers a nice jump with a 45-yard kickoff return to begin the game, setting up an opening-drive touchdown. Brian Buschini continued his excellent season with a coffin-corner punt to pin Wisconsin at its own 3-yard line, and John Hohl connected on 37- and 45-yard field goals. GRADE: B The Dana Holgorsen effect is real. Nebraska’s offense moved as smoothly as it has since the first half against Colorado in Week 2. Raiola was comfortable. Playmakers like Johnson and Jacory Barney Jr. got the ball in space, and the Huskers finally stopped looking like they were fighting themselves. GRADE: B It really didn’t matter how Nebraska got to six wins. The resulting feeling was always going to be cathartic, and eight years of pressure and dread released from Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the recent past dissipating into the air. The Huskers’ bowl drought is no longer a topic of conversation. For one night, nothing else matters. GRADE: A

WASHINGTON (AP) — A freelance photographer and local government official from Illinois has been arrested on charges alleging he joined a mob's attack on the U.S. Capitol and pushed against a police officer’s riot shield, according to court records unsealed on Friday. Patrick Gorski, 27, was arrested in Chicago on Thursday on charges including obstructing law enforcement officers during a civil disorder, a felony. A federal judge ordered him released on bond after his initial court appearance. Gorski didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment. An attorney who represented him after his arrest declined to comment on Gorski's behalf. Authorities allege that during the attack, Gorski climbed scaffolding, breaching police lines, and took photos and videos inside the building. He yelled at officers, pushed against an officer's riot shield and was eventually forced out after being sprayed with a chemical irritant, authorities said. When the FBI interviewed him, Gorski did not claim that he was working as a photojournalist during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and said he didn't bring his professional camera to the Capitol. He told federal agents that he had worked as a photographer for the Chicago Fire Department and for Donald Trump’s 2020 presidential campaign. He has not professionally published any photographs of the Capitol riot, according to the FBI. An FBI agent’s affidavit says some of Gorski’s sports photographs are available through Getty Images and have been “picked up” by The Associated Press and USA Today. Authorities said Gorski has continued to take photos at some local sporting events in Chicago but hasn't published any political photographs in the last five years. Gorski is not an Associated Press journalist and has never been employed by the news organization, said Lauren Easton, AP's vice president of corporate communications. "We have distributed some photos he took for AP’s photo partners and member news organizations," Easton said in a statement. Gorski's resume says he works as a building commissioner for the Village of Norridge, Illinois, and graduated earlier this year from Southeastern Illinois University with a master’s degree in public administration. He attended then-President Trump's “Stop the Steal” rally near the White House on Jan. 6 before he marched to the Capitol in a group of people that included conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and Owen Shroyer , who has hosted a show on Jones' Infowars website. On the west side of the Capitol, Gorski climbed up a wall onto stairs, helped another rioter onto the wall and removed a tarp covering scaffolding, according to the FBI. He climbed up and down the scaffolding before he helped pass a bike rack to other rioters, the agent's affidavit says. Gorski pointed and yelled at police officers outside the building. He also clapped and chanted, “Let us in!” After rioters broke through a police lines and sent officers retreating, Gorski hung a flag over the edge of a balcony. Gorski used his phone to take photos or videos inside a tunnel entrance that police were guarding, according to the affidavit. He screamed at the officers, “This is our house!” as he pushed against an officer’s riot shield, the FBI said. Gorski left the tunnel after several minutes and entered the Capitol through the Senate Wing door, taking more photos or videos inside the building, the affidavit says. An officer had to forcibly move Gorski from a doorway in another part of the Capitol, according to the agent. Gorski retreated after police sprayed him with a chemical irritant. Approximately one year after the attack, the FBI received a tip that Gorski had posted photos of the riot in a group chat with friends. When the 136th annual Rose Bowl Parade rolls down Colorado Boulevard, it will feature the first ever float powered by an electric vehicle. Aside from a win for electrification, the Mars-themed float also includes several other firsts that help cement the parade’s reputation as a tech-forward event decked out in flowers. CleanTechnica got the inside scoop on the new float from its mastermind, Ernest Koeppen, President of the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association. Mr. Koeppen graciously shared his work on the new electric vehicle in an email to CleanTechnica. Here is our Q&A in full. I’ve added links to some of the technologies he mentioned, along with some light edits for clarity. CleanTechnica : Can you provide some details about the electric vehicle — is it an electric pickup truck, for example, or was it specially built for the float? Do the accessories on the float (robotics, drones, etc.) use batteries or is an on-board generator required? Koeppen: The vehicle is a special vehicle assembled and evolved over the life of the [La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association ], which began in 1978. There are parts from a cement truck axle to old fire engine frame to unique one-off build-to-suit needs. The vehicle weighs 20,000 to 30,000 pounds depending on the build of the year. Previous to this year power has been supplied via two V8 engines turning hydraulic pumps for animation and propulsion, plus a third generating all auxiliary power for communications, lighting, climate, sound and effects. This year we have removed two of them (the third will be removed next year as we ran out of time to install its replacement safely). As of now all robotics, helicopter, rover, all Martian character mechanisms, communications, lighting, sound system atmospheric smoke [etc.] are running off six LiFePo battery packs, weighing over 1 ton for a total of over 150 KWh of energy. The iron phosphates were chosen for a number of reasons, safety due to close proximity to the public being one of the main ones [see more background about the connection between electric vehicles and iron phosphate energy storage here ]. The auto industry has been recycling itself for generations, an effort that now includes electric vehicle battery recycling , so it’s no surprise to see the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association focusing like a laser on resource management. CleanTechnica : What kinds of materials were most easily recycled from the previous year? What recommendations do you have for others to recycle/repurpose float materials? Koeppen: The majority of the recycling has been the planned and judicious use of uniform sizes of steel that we can re-purpose. Additionally various foams that are carved can be re-carved down smaller each year; sheet foams are totally re-usable, floral is dried and ground and used as dry base in following year. Using electrical motors and gears vs. many gallons of hydraulic fluid [is another example]. The lighter non-reusable metals (i.e. screens and so forth) are sent to the recycler. That just leaves the painted expanded spray foam sections to store and use as filler for as long as we can before disposition. One way to recycle a great deal of a float is to use the same sub-frame (above the chassis which is always a total re-use-as-is item) and simply decorate over the same fixed pattern. This does indeed work for some, but with that comes a critical reduction in some creativity, lending itself to a certain sense of “been there done that.” We feel modeling to a Parade theme keeps the wonder alive. So to that end building smarter — using materials than can be cut down smaller and re-used, while minimally backfilling with new — works best for us. We even use better quality hardware down to high grade screws and bolts that last for years rather than get disposed of. The new electric vehicle float is also the latest iteration of an ongoing, free youth training program under the umbrella of the La Cañada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association, which Koeppen calls the TechNovation Center [not to be confused with another worthwhile youth organization with a similar name]. CleanTechnica : What kinds of skills training does the TechNovation Center provide? Koeppen: The float site and float build are open classrooms that we offer as a free an open resource; in part to replace the traditional shop and industrial arts classes no longer offered in our public schools. Not as any sort of competition, rather it is a symbiotic resource. Students that come can receive community service hours, but we are also working with the school district to be able to offer credit. Students that come here have the opportunity to experience and learn Welding, Design, CAD, Fabrication, Robotics, Hydraulics and Electrical to name a few disciplines. All under the big umbrella of “maker.” We offer and teach what we call the DREAM curriculum: D esign R esearch E ngineering A rt M aker. And we rarely if ever say no to any idea; indeed our mantra is “Fail to 100%.” This is a community endeavor and there is a piece and idea of everyone built into this. The ideas and tech that make up the big picture here is the program. Seeing an advanced float come out of the grand collaboration that is then displayed on the world stage, is just the cherry on top that makes the DREAM come alive. The electric vehicle innards of the new float will be hidden under a mind-bending display of technological activity including a homage to ingenuity in the form of a drone from the firm Aerovironment (a first for the Rose Parade) and robotics-controlled color-changing floral displays (another first). Still, just knowing that it’s there can make a difference. Hopefully other floatmakers will make the switch to electric vehicles, if not to save the planet then to spare other marchers from having to breathe the exhaust from internal combustion engines and generators. CleanTechnica : Can you describe why it’s important for a high profile event like the Rose Parade to showcase sustainability? What kinds of actions have the organizers taken that seem to have the most impact? Koeppen: Sustainability can often take many forms, more frequently it takes shape in small forms (i.e. a battery powered leaf blower). We feel it is tremendously important to be able use a high profile event such as the Tournament of Roses Parade to display how to think big, witnessing creativity, ingenuity and innovation being applied at the grandest scale. In this particular case it is also apropos, given that it is a “floral parade” that exudes “green,” so it makes sense that the parade actually is Green. Social responsibility and being good stewards of our resources is always a positive trait to lead by example, in this case being able to further that and use it as an opportunity to showcase unique skills and applications to achieve it; and much of it is performed by youth learning trade skills. It builds community and a knowledge transfer path for all. A nearly quarter-of-a-century-old mystery will soon be unveiled in New Westminster, B.C. Inside the tin soldier that stands at the Quay—which is the Guinness World Record holder for tallest sculpture of its kind in the world—sits a time capsule filled with messages from local kids created in 2002. According to the city, the makers of the time capsule decided it should be opened on Valentine's Day 2025, a date picked to show their love for New Westminster. Last week, city council voted unanimously to honour that wish. “It’s just kind of a fun thing to do,” said Coun. Ruby Campbell, as she introduced the motion. “I think it would be fantastic to be able to honour this.” After Mayor Patrick Johnstone quipped that the 2000s feel like last week, councillors voted to ask staff to come up with a plan and budget for a time capsule opening event on Feb. 14. Rumour has it that the mementos from 23 years ago, kept in the soldier’s heart, are stored on an almost obsolete piece of technology. “I’m kind of anxious to know what’s in there; we’re all kind of guessing it might be a CD-ROM, but we still wanna open that thing up and then find some device to be able to play it on,” said Campbell. Looking to burnish communications to the community, the Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) is planning to move ahead with the creation of a dedicated smartphone app. “I think it’s a step in the right direction because now instead of relying on mailouts, we’re using the technology that’s already in our members’ hands and communicating with them that way,” said MCK chief Amy Beauvais. The app will be used by all MCK departments to deliver updates, job opportunities, and other information pertinent to band members, but it will not replace existing forms of communication, Beauvais said. “A large majority of our members have smartphones, but that isn’t to say we’re going to obliterate the other forms of communication,” she said. “We’re not trying to get rid of anything. We’re just trying to add and improve.” Beauvais presented the option to other Council chiefs after she was approached with the concept by technology company Communikit, which specializes in creating app solutions for First Nations. “I would say I was ecstatic when I found out,” said Beauvais, who has been looking for ways to boost Council’s outreach following her experience at the Indigenous-led First Nations Executive Education (FNEE) program at HEC Montreal. At the school, she worked on a project that envisioned a communications department at the MCK. It’s something she’s now working to put into action, she said, alongside the MCK’s new administrative consultant. Improving communications is a priority, she said, because community members have often complained they don’t know what Council is doing. Communikit’s technology is already being used by other First Nations, including Six Nations of the Grand River, which issues announcements and other information on the app. The suite of features even allows for forms to be filled out, although Six Nations doesn’t currently have any available. “I think to have a one-stop shop is great,” said Six Nations of the Grand River public relations coordinator Darryl Smart. “There are so many different platforms out there and so many ways to get the message out. If you can spread that message to as many people as possible, I think that’s the big one.” He said in his community, too, paper is not going anywhere. He remembers the department pounding the pavement this summer to deliver parking information ahead of homegrown Kanien’kehá:ka National Hockey League star Brandon Montour coming to town with the Stanley Cup. “Physical information will never go away because if you’re in communications, you also have to realize it’s nice to have the tools, but you also have to realize not everyone has these tools,” Smart said. American Thanksgiving is almost upon up, but general manager are already thinking about the upcoming deadline. Teams are trying to fill holes and fill needs in their respective rosters. Some moves have already been made. However, others may have to wait a bit longer to make a deal. One contending roster that’s trying to fix things is the New York Rangers. This edition of NHL rumours deals with the team looking to strengthen the centre spot. All NHL rumours come from the original spot and are subject to change. NHL Rumours New York Rangers Look for Centre Help Rumour: Vincent Z. Mercogliano of Lohud had a recent mailbag about how the Blueshirts may improve their roster. We talked adding to the defence in a previous edition of NHL rumours. However, we focus on possible forward help for New York. Analysis: Mercogliano said the Rangers should address their blueline issues. However, Filip Chytil injury may prove too much of a hole for general manager Chris Drury to avoid. New York does have a good record, but it was regarded as a main Stanley Cup contender before the season. The Rangers have picked up wins, but there are some noticeable flaws in their roster. Chytil’s recent injury has once again raised concerns about the team’s roster. There are some good forwards, but the bottom-part of the lineup does make some Blueshirts’ fans nervous. The Rangers’ on-ice play and injuries will determine Drury’s next course of action. Who’s on the Radar Mercogliano brings up a couple of forwards that the Rangers could target. One of them is veteran centre Yanni Gourde of the Seattle Kraken . He carries a $5.167 million cap hit and is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Seattle could move some players if they fall out of contention. This is a distinct possibility with Jordan Eberle missing some time. Another target is a familiar face to Rangers’ fans. Mercogliano mentions that Frank Vatrano could make a return to Manhattan if the Rangers and Anaheim Ducks make a deal. Vatrano was a deadline acquisition at the 2022 trade deadline . He currently makes $3.65 million this season. Drury does worry about cap space with his roster. However, both Seattle and Anaheim could retain up to 50-percent of the either player’s salary to make a deal easier to digest. Both clubs aren’t using any of their retention slots at this time. A Surprising Trade Chip Mercogliano also mentions the Rangers could move an important part of their roster to create space. Defenceman Ryan Lindgren is making $4.5 million after signing a one-year pact in the off-season. There’s worry that Lindgren may walk for nothing in the 2025 free agency window.
