Luckily, the city has scores of great museums to choose from: Everything from small and quirky, to elegant gems housed in historic mansions, to preserved Lower East Side tenement apartments and hands-on experiences that might surprise even longtime New Yorkers. “Going to the Museum of Modern Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the American Museum of Natural History is fantastic. But they can be like a big super-sized coffee drink, while we’re more like a cup of espresso,” says Alex Kalman, director of two of the city’s tiniest museums, Mmuseumm1 and Mmuseumm2. One is built into an old elevator shaft in a downtown alleyway. At other small museums you’ll find a cozy, Viennese-style coffee shop; kosher Jewish comfort food; and edgy gift shops. You could view the chair that George Washington sat in before giving his inaugural address to Congress. Or you might make seltzer or solve math puzzles. Here’s some of what’s happening at NYC’s “other” museums: 1048 5th Ave. This museum, housed in a 1914 Gilded Age mansion that was once home to society doyenne Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III, focuses on art and design from Austria and Germany. Its Cafe Sabarsky is a destination of its own, with 1912 upholstery, period decor, and a grand piano in the corner used for cabaret, chamber and classical music performances. Completed in 1902, the mansion was the first in the U.S. to have a structural steel frame, and one of the first in the city to have a passenger elevator and central heating. It is now LEED-certified and features other cutting-edge technologies. A major exhibit on now, “Making Home: Smithsonian Design Triennial,” explores design’s role in shaping concepts of home, physically and emotionally. It sprawls over the entire mansion and will be on view through Aug. 10. 1 Bowling Green The other Smithsonian in town, it’s at the lower end of Manhattan inside the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House, now a city landmark. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni kept quiet this week on which QB will start Sunday, in large part, of course, because of the head injury suffered by Hurts in last week’s loss to Washington that forced him into the concussion protocol . The issue was complicated by backup Kenny Pickett’s rib injury suffered in relief of Hurts in his first real game competition in nearly a year. Tanner McKee, the third-string QB, could move into a backup role — or maybe even get the start against the Cowboys. As part of its provisional budget for 2025, the City of Port Moody says it will disband its local volunteer firefighters association after 111 years of service. Port Moody Volunteer Firefighters Association (PMVFA) — separate from, but managed by Port Moody Fire Rescue (PMFR) — will not receive city funding in 2025, following a “detailed financial review.” The association took to social media Tuesday to respond to the change, saying its members remain commited to their duties. “The Port Moody Volunteer Firefighters Association has carried forward the legacy of the original volunteer-led fire suppression service established in 1913, the year of Port Moody’s incorporation,” read a . In the years since its inception, the PMVFA says volunteers have helped with training and mentoring firefighters, deployment, structural and high-rise firefighting, wildfire response, motor vehicle incident management, embankment rescues, post-disaster building assessments, and emergency centre operations. The association says the cut was proposed by PMFR Chief Darcey O’Riordan. The departmental cited several reasons for defunding the association, including declining use in recent years, increasing costs associated with volunteer turnover, and an ongoing strategy to add more full-time career firefighters to PMFR. The city says PMFR will not be affected as it phases out the use of volunteer service. “In recognizing the ongoing exceptional contributions by Volunteer Firefighters in supporting community events and fundraisers, PMFR will be working with the volunteers to explore ways to continue to provide volunteer activities associated with the PMFR and recognize the legacy of the Port Moody Volunteer Firefighter Program,” the city said. Eagles try to clinch NFC East title with Hurts' head injury looming largeThis week, the group Oklahoma United called for abolishing our state’s primary-election system and replacing it with a “jungle primary” in which the top two candidates proceed to the November general election ballot regardless of party affiliation. Oklahoma United’s proposal is substantially based on California law. If you think California politics represent the ideal, this plan is for you. But for most Oklahomans, that alone is a giant red flag. Currently, Republicans and Democrats choose party nominees in primary elections, and during the general election in November all voters choose between those two nominees and any third-party or independent candidates who run. That system has worked well for decades. But Oklahoma United argues it would be better if all candidates were placed on the same ballot in a primary, with political affiliations listed, and all voters participated. The two candidates receiving the most votes would then proceed to the general election. In practice, that system could easily lead to the effective disenfranchisement of most Oklahomans. In 2018, the last time the governor’s race involved no incumbent, 10 Republicans and two Democrats filed, providing 12 total candidates. There were 452,606 votes cast for a Republican candidate in that year’s primary and 395,494 for a Democrat. Despite the overall preference for a Republican candidate, if Oklahoma United’s top-two California system had been in place the general election would have been between Democratic candidate Drew Edmondson and Democratic candidate Connie Johnson. Why? Because the Republican primary involved so many candidates the vote was split and no Republican received more votes than the total cast for Edmondson or Johnson. Thus, Republican voters in Oklahoma—a group that represented about two in three votes cast in this year’s presidential race—would have had no option for governor in November 2018. The top-two California system was used in this year’s Tulsa mayoral race, although the municipal jungle primary did not list candidates’ partisan affiliations. Tulsa mayoral elections have shifted between the two parties over the last 20 years, meaning both parties have been competitive. But under the top-two California system, Tulsa voters wound up with two Democratic candidates for mayor in November. Monroe Nichols, the most liberal of the two, won.
