Rudd was undoubtedly well qualified for the ambassadorship under the previous Biden administration: he has foreign affairs experience and extensive political experience, including as an Australian prime minister; is a fluent Mandarin speaker; and has specialized in a range of international studies. However, this has not prepared him for an unpredictable Trump administration. Most politicians have fixed opinions about policy options, and their capacity to accept opposing views is often limited. Australian political debates occur most commonly in a rigid environment where negotiation and compromise are regarded as signs of weakness. Consequently, it is harder for senior politicians to consider alternative policy agendas and adapt a nuanced diplomatic position in international discussions. Despite this extensive in-service training of career diplomats, Australian governments frequently appoint politicians with scant special diplomacy skills to represent the nation overseas. Critics argue that elected members and senators representing either the Liberals or the ALP are not necessarily familiar with world affairs, and many would doubt their capacity to be diplomatic. Government leaders often make ambassadorial appointments when rewarding former ministers. These appointments are criticised as “jobs for the boys” — and indeed very few women have been anointed with this benefit. Political appointments rarely have bipartisan support, too, and we’ve seen Peter Dutton further entrench the debate about Ambassador Rudd’s future by reminding the community his appointment was Anthony Albanese’s “captain’s pick” . This ties the prime minister to remain loyal to Rudd despite the prospect that the Trump administration may demand a diplomatic replacement. Perhaps it is time for Australian governments to seriously examine how highly they rate diplomacy in their management of foreign policy. Since its early role at the formation of the United Nations in 1945, Australia has a proud tradition of taking a leading role in key initiatives like peacekeeping missions and the Chemical Weapons Treaty. However in recent years, our governments have lost interest in being proactive as a middle power, preferring more to line up with old allies than assert our independence in foreign and defence policy.

A video of the shooting showed the suspect walk out behind Thompson—who did not have a security detail—before firing multiple times. Prior to Mangione’s arrest, police said they believed the shooting was “a brazen targeted attack” and searched New York City before saying they believed the suspect had left the city on a bus. Thompson’s wife, Paulette Thompson, told NBC News “there had been some threats,” but didn’t provide details on what the threats were. Thompson had two sons, one who just graduated from high school and one still in high school. The Times also reported Mangione worked as a counselor in the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies Program in 2019. How Was Luigi Mangione Caught? New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Mangione was recognized in a McDonald’s in Altoona and was reported to local police, who then found he had “multiple fraudulent IDs,” a U.S. passport, a firearm and suppressor similar to what was used in the murder and a “handwritten document that speaks to both his motivation and mindset.” Officers reportedly asked Mangione if he was in New York recently, which resulted in him becoming quiet and shaking, according to a description of his arrest. In Honolulu, where police said Mangione’s last known address was, he was a member of a co-working space called Hub Coworking Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported . Mangione would reportedly come and work at the location with his roommates from a nearby co-living space called Surfbreak. On its website, Surfbreak describes itself as a “co-living and co-working community for digital nomads and remote workers.” Surfbreak founder and CEO R.J. Martin expressed shock about Mangione’s arrest and told the Honolulu Civil Beat , “I loved this guy...In some ways I feel like my members are my kids.” According to the report, other residents of the co-living space described Mangione as a “natural leader” and said he helped found a book club in the community. Martin and another resident told the outlet that they had suggested the book club should read “Industrial Society and Its Future”—a book written by Unabomber Ted Kaczynski —as “a joke.” What Did Mangione Say About The Unabomber’s Book? A Goodreads account seeming to belong to Mangione gave the book a four-star review in January. The review written by the account—which was made private on Monday—said “It's easy to quickly and thoughtless write this off as the manifesto of a lunatic, in order to avoid facing some of the uncomfortable problems it identifies. But it's simply impossible to ignore how prescient many of his predictions about modern society turned out.” The review also quoted another person’s take about how “violence is necessary to survive.” The New York Times reported Tuesday that Mangione told a writer in England, Gurwinder Bhogal, he disapproved of the Unabomber’s actions, but Bhogal said Mangione “was fascinated by [the Unabomber’s] ideology, and shared his concerns about rampant consumerism gradually eroding our agency and alienating us from ourselves.” Are Mangione’s Social Media Accounts Still Up? Shortly after his arrest, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X and Goodreads accounts that may have belonged to him were discovered. He also appeared to be active on Reddit, writing about back pain issues, Forbes reported . Nearly all social media accounts with reported ties to Mangione had been switched to private or taken down by platforms—with one notable exception. Mangione’s account on X was briefly taken down Monday evening, but X owner Elon Musk said it was done “without his knowledge” and he was looking into it. Shortly after, the account was reinstated. YouTube confirmed to Forbes the page was not associated with Mangione, though, saying “the channel’s metadata was updated following widespread reporting of Luigi Mangione’s arrest, including updates made to the channel name and handle.” YouTube added it terminated three other accounts that were linked to Mangione, but said they hadn’t been active in more than seven months. What Do We Know About Mangione’s Health Issues? Mangione’s friends in Hawaii told various news outlets that he was suffering from a serious back problem that caused him significant pain. Mangione left Hawaii to get back surgery last year and then returned to Honolulu to rent an apartment. Surfbreak’s Martin told The New York Times that Mangione said his spine was misaligned and “said his lower vertebrae were almost like a half-inch off, and I think it pinched a nerve.” Martin added that Mangione had confided to him about not being able to date people because of his back problem as “being physically intimate with his back condition wasn’t possible.” Martin told the Times he texted Mangione after his surgery asking how it had gone and got the response “long story” without further details. Although the two had promised to catch up over the phone later, Mangione eventually went “ radio silent. ” An account on Reddit that is believed to have belonged to Mangione was active in the subreddit “r/spondylolisthesis,” where people discussed the condition in which vertebrae in the spine slip out of place. “When my spondy went bad on me last year (23M) it was completely devastating as a young athletic person,” the alleged Mangione account wrote, Forbes reported. The Baltimore Banner reported Mangione comes “from a prominent Baltimore family.” According to the Banner, his grandfather was a self-made real estate developer who owned country clubs, nursing homes and a radio station, and that his grandmother was “a supporter of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center” and the Baltimore Opera Company. The Mangione family has owned Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley, Maryland—northwest of the city of Baltimore—since 1986, according to the Banner. Who Is Nino Mangione? North Dakota State erases 14-point deficit, beats Abilene Christian 51-31 in FCS second roundOTTAWA — Opposition MPs accused Canada’s Consul General in New York of lying to a Commons committee over the fact he’d raised concerns about his official residence as the government purchased a $9-million condo on Billionaires’ Row. Thursday, Consul General Tom Clark was grilled by opposition MPs at the Commons Government Operations committee over whether he did or didn’t influence Global Affair Canada’s (GAC) decision to purchase the new luxury official residence. In previous testimony, Clark had assured the committee that he had played no role in GAC’s decision to purchase a new official residence in New York City, arguing that the process had begun years previous and was well underway by the time he was appointed in February 2023. GAC claims that the new residence represents up to $7.4 million in savings for taxpayers, since it comes at a lower cost than the $13 million listing price of the current one and will eliminate spending $2.6 million in renovation costs and save $115,000 in annual operational fees. But in recent weeks, documents released via an access to information request to Politico and the National Post revealed an internal GAC email that noted “the (Consulate General New York) in April 2023 informed ... senior management that the property is not suitable for representational activities, and it is not suitable as a residence and requires immediate replacement.” Following that reporting, the committee re-summoned Clark to explain the apparent contradiction. Thursday, Conservatives charged the consul general with lying to committee and called on him to resign, while the NDP worried that he had tried to mislead MPs. “There are now multiple data points that didn’t come from admissions from you or your staff ... that revealed that you were involved, that your Champagne tastes weren’t being met,” charged Conservative MP Michael Barrett. “Why don’t you just come clean with this committee and Canadians admit you’ve lied, follow in Randy Boissonnault’s footsteps and resign,” added his colleague Kelly Block, referring to Boissonnault’s resignation from cabinet Wednesday due to shifting statements over ties to Indigenous heritage. He said those had to do with the furniture not being useable for people with mobility or accessibility issues and the fact that “designated family space” in the old residence was limited to bedrooms while the remaining space was open to hosting and “representation.” “I did not talk to anybody about relocating,” he said, adding that his comments to colleagues “were never ever intended to try and sway anything.” “At no time did I ask that we change residences, and I think that’s an important point,” he continued. “This process has been going on for a long time ... I made no direct complaint to the process.” But his explanations did not sit well with NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice, who questioned why Clark had insisted in previous committee testimony that he had never spoken with anyone about the condo purchase. “Why were you so categorical in this committee ... that you hadn’t discussed with anyone about relocation?” he asked Clark, who was a longtime journalist before retiring and being appointed consul general to New York. “When you say ‘I did not ask’ ... for a move or a relocation, but then you make repeated comments to personnel that the residence isn’t appropriate, that the space isn’t suitable, that it isn’t good for family, that the furniture isn’t suitable, that there are accessibility issues, that can easily be interpreted as a desire to move,” he said. The Hoosiers (10-1, 7-1, No. 5 CFP) had their best chance to beat the Buckeyes for the first time since 1988 but were hurt by special teams mistakes and disrupted by an Ohio State defence that sacked Canadian quarterback Kurtis Rourke five times. “In life, all good things come to an end,” Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said. Late in the first half, Indiana punter James Evans fumbled a snap and was buried at his own 7-yardline with the Buckeyes taking over. That turned quickly into a 4-yard TD run by Henderson that gave the Buckeyes a 14-7 lead. He couldn’t see the game on Sunday, so he just saw the score and how it went to overtime. He said it looked like a typical Dolphins vs. Jets game. I said, “Yes, it was. The Dolphins should have lost the game on Sunday because the Jets were the better team, but the Jets have stupid coaches, and they bailed the Dolphins out.” I was very disappointed in the Dolphins’ defense on Sunday. They were bad, and yes, they had a 5-yard loss and a sack on back-to-back plays on the final possession. Kendall Fuller was able to get Devante Adams out of bounds to keep time on the clock, but for the most part, the Jets’ offense had its way with the Dolphins. It started up front where the Jets don’t have a very good offensive line, but they ran the ball decently against the Dolphins with two rookie running backs drafted late in the draft. The Dolphins were giving up 4 yards a carry, making you wonder why the Jets didn’t keep running it. The Dolphins were missing a tackle and not getting much push up front. Aaron Rodgers picked apart the Dolphins all day long, throwing his first 300-yard game in over two years. Adams and Garrett Wilson looked like the duo the Jets had been looking for all season. The Dolphins had no answers for them. I feel like the Dolphins have more holes than ever on defense, and they are getting labeled as being soft , and it’s more than justified. The Dolphins don’t set the tone up front and get pushed, especially against good teams, but the Jets aren’t even an average team. Our defensive line lacks physicality as a whole and can’t dominate up front. I knew it would be different this year after losing Christian Wilkins , but the Dolphins banked on 38-year-old Calais Campbell and many guys on one-year contracts. Campbell and Zach Seiler have played well, but the other guys don’t give the effort those guys offer. The Dolphins have to find some younger, bigger, and more physical players to compliment Seiler on the defensive line next year, or we are going to see the same issues upfront. The Dolphins also need better linebackers. Yes, Jordan Brooks has played well but missed some tackles on Sunday. Anthony Walker has provided a little spark after moving on from David Long but has durability issues. The Dolphins need to find an inside linebacker who can run sideline to sideline and make tackles—one who doesn’t take bad angles, over-pursue, and miss the ball carrier. It’s been a while since the Dolphins have had that type of linebacker. Instead, they have had undersized guys who aren’t physical enough against the better teams. How many games this year have we seen the Dolphins miss over ten tackles? Too many. That’s why they were overmatched by the Green Bay Packers, and it cost them the game against the Arizona Cardinals on their final drive to win earlier this year. And the safeties are horrible as a group. Jordan Poyer needs to retire because he can’t play anymore, and it is so clear every time you watch him play. He’s not as fast as he used to be, and he is a liability. Jevon Holland is supposed to be our blue-chip safety for years to come, and his contract is up after the season. Well, I would tell him to take a walk after the season because his play has been uninspiring to say the least. He takes bad angle,s and he and Poyer are constantly having communication issues in the secondary. The Dolphins have to tear down that position as well and more physical ball-hawking safeties. I’m not going to place the blame on defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver because it’s an easy cop-out. I blame the person who put this team together, and that’s general manager Chris Grier. I don’t know why he thought this defense would be good signing older players and a bunch of scrap-free agents to one-year deals. He should have done a better job last offseason. If he returns next year, this team currently has ten draft pick,s and he needs to use at least half of them to rebuild this defense. It needs to get younger, and it needs players that are tough-minded and physical. This group as a whole doesn’t have it. They also need to get faster. I understand the Dolphins went into the season without their top pass rushers from a season ago coming off season-ending injuries, but that’s on Grier for not stocking up the defense better. This side of the ball went through change with free-agent losses, and it needs more change next year. If they don’t, then it’s going to be the same soft defense. You can change the defensive coordinator, but that would be lazy putting lipstick on the pig. If the Dolphins want to shed the soft label on defense, go find more tough-minded players. Eskom extended the deadline to upgrade prepaid meters but customers will be required to buy electricity tokens by Saturday to make their meters key revision number 2 (KRN2) compliant. Thousands of residents continued to queue outside Eskom sites on Saturday to get assistance in upgrading their prepaid meters in an attempt to meet the initial Sunday deadline. But the power utility announced it will extend the deadline for zero buyers with active meters, said Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena. “A technological breakthrough has enabled Eskom to pre-create key change tokens (KCT) on its online vending system. Zero buyers in this situation need to go to their legal vending sites with their meter numbers to buy electricity. They will be issued with their KCT by the vending agents to make their meters KRN2 compliant.” She said purchasing such tokens should be done before Sunday to trigger the activation of meters in KRN2 mode. “Once the meter has been activated by the purchase of electricity, the customer can visit any of the Eskom sites to complete the conversion process. The final step can be completed after [Sunday].” Earlier this week, minister of electricity and energy Kgosientsho Ramokgopa reiterated that meters using the KRN1 system would no longer accept electricity tokens. He said more than 2.1-million people had still not migrated to the new system and stood the risk of not having electricity after the deadline.
