The Philadelphia Phillies have been actively seeking ways to enhance their outfield, and while they recently acquired Max Kepler, his skillset leans heavily on defense. Kepler is a reliable presence in the field but lacks the kind of offensive firepower the Phillies need to stay competitive in the National League. To address this imbalance, the Phillies could considering a blockbuster trade to acquire Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. Jim Bowden of The Atheltic presented a good idea: “I would still like to see the Philadelphia make a trade with the White Sox for Luis Robert Jr. and go with an outfield of Nick Castellanos in right field, Robert in center and Brandon Marsh in left...” Robert’s Down Year but Undeniable Potential Luis Robert Jr. experienced a challenging 2024 season, playing just 100 games and posting underwhelming numbers at the plate. He hit .224/.278/.379 with 14 home runs and 35 RBIs, resulting in a disappointing offensive season. Despite the down year, Robert’s underlying potential remains undeniable. Known for his explosive athleticism and raw power, he has previously shown flashes of being a 150 wRC+ hitter when healthy and in form. At just 27 years old, Robert is entering the prime of his career and still possesses the tools to develop into one of the league’s most dynamic offensive forces. His ability to hit for power and play a strong center field would immediately elevate the Phillies’ lineup and outfield defense. A Cost-Controlled Star for the Phillies’ Outfield What makes Robert particularly attractive is his team-friendly contract. He has club options through 2027, giving the Phillies cost certainty and control for several more seasons. With free agency looming in 2028, the Phillies would have multiple years to capitalize on his potential resurgence or explore a long-term extension should he thrive in Philadelphia. What It Would Take to Land Robert Acquiring Robert won’t come cheap. The White Sox will likely demand a significant haul of top-tier prospects and MLB-ready talent in return for their young star. The Phillies would need to part with some of their prized assets, possibly including players like Mick Abel or Andrew Painter, to make the trade a reality. The cost will undoubtedly be steep, but the payoff could be monumental if Robert bounces back and becomes the player many believe he can be. Why This Move Makes Sense The Phillies are built to win now, and adding a player of Robert’s caliber would address one of their most pressing needs. Pairing him with Kepler in the outfield would create a balanced mix of power and defense while providing Bryce Harper and the rest of the lineup with a significant boost. It’s a high-risk, high-reward proposition, but for a team aiming to compete for a World Series, it may be the kind of gamble worth taking. My question concerns a situation that happens frequently when one of them starts dating or marries. They seem to feel I should enjoy the company of BOTH of them together from then on. My response has been to refuse any invitations, but it feels rude and impolite. I would appreciate your advice, and thank you! -- SINGLE LADY IN THE MIDWEST DEAR SINGLE LADY: Running away isn’t the answer. Instead of cutting off these women without explanation when they become involved in a romantic relationship, it would make more sense to point out to them that women (and men) communicate differently when members of the opposite sex are present. It’s the truth. Couples don’t have to be joined at the hip 100% of the time, and, in fact, it’s healthier for their relationship when they sometimes socialize as individuals. *** Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. When the snow is falling and hot chocolate is piping, few activities are more refreshing and relaxing than plopping down on the couch and turning on the television. Some will watch live Christmas events from Rockefeller Center, while others will tune into a bowl game. But if you’re of a certain age, you clearly remember the excitement when Nickelodeon began to roll out its litany of timeless Christmas specials. From Kenan & Kel in the 1990s to Danny Phantom in the late 2000s, Nickelodeon has entered the pantheon of networks that have consistently rolled out classic holiday specials. While Nickelodeon’s legacy is cemented, the ranking of its best holiday season episodes is and will always be hotly contested. Not to start a debate at the holiday dinner table, but here are the 10 best classic Nickelodeon holiday specials.Rams WR Demarcus Robinson not suspended, will play Sunday after arrest on DUI suspicionWisconsin faces its first losing season in 23 years and the end of a bowl streak when the Badgers host arch-rival Minnesota on Friday in the annual Big Ten battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe. Minnesota (6-5, 4-4) lost to No. 4 Penn State 26-25. Wisconsin (5-6, 3-5 Big Ten) lost its fourth straight, 44-25, at Nebraska in a game that was not as close as the score. "Well 1890 is the first time we played this football team coming up and this is what it's all about," Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck said of the rivalry. "And you wouldn't want to have it any other way, being able to end the season with one of your biggest rivals. I know our guys will be ready to go, ready to play." Wisconsin has 22 consecutive winning seasons since going 5-7 under Barry Alvarez in 2001, the longest active streak among Power 4 teams. The Badgers also have played in a bowl game in each of the last 22 seasons, the longest active streak in the Big Ten and third-longest in FBS. Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell is more concerned with the rivalry game than the winning season and bowl streaks. "I'm not downplaying it, I'm not saying it's not important, I'm not saying it's another thing that's on our plate," Fickell said Monday. "But when it gets down to this last week, it's about one thing, it's about the rivalry. It's about preparing to play in the most important game of the year." The Gophers have dropped their last two games after winning four in a row. Minnesota averages 26.6 points per game, while allowing 18.5, 15th-best in the country. Max Brosmer has completed 67 percent of his passes for 221 per game with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. Daniel Jackson is the top target with 69 catches for 802 yards and three scores, and Darius Taylor is the top rusher with 730 yards at 4.8 per carry with nine touchdowns. One week after leading Oregon after three quarters, the Wisconsin defense was shredded for 473 yards and five touchdowns by Nebraska. Braedyn Locke, who took over at quarterback when Tyler Van Dyke suffered an early season-ending knee injury, has thrown at least one interception in eight consecutive games. Locke has completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 180.6 yards per game, with 12 touchdowns and 10 picks. Tawee Walker is the leading rusher with 828 yards at 4.7 per carry with 10 touchdowns. He has failed to reach 60 yards in three of the last four games. Former Wisconsin and NFL standout JJ Watt posted on social media his assessment - and frustration - with the Badgers after the Nebraska game. "Losing happens, it's part of the game. Hearing announcers talk about how much tougher and more physical Nebraska & Iowa are while getting blown out ... that's the issue," Watt wrote on X. "We are Wisconsin. Physicality, running game, great O-Line and great defense. That is our identity." Wisconsin defeated the Gophers 28-14 last after Minnesota had won the previous two meetings. The Badgers have won 7 of the last 10 and lead the storied series 63-62-8. --Field Level Media

Amber Heard has broken her silence on the sexual harassment lawsuit Blake Lively filed against her It Ends with Us co-star , Justin Baldoni. The pair were cast as leads in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel by the same name. Despite their initial mutual admiration in interviews, rumors of a fallout surfaced around the film's release. Both Blake, 37, and Justin, 40, declined to promote the film together, opting for separate red carpet photos and interviews. Blake has since shocked Hollywood by filing a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin , alleging inappropriate behavior towards her and other cast and crew members. Justin is reportedly employing PR manager Melissa Nathan, who represented Johnny Depp during his defamation trial with Amber, which resulted in Depp being awarded $10million in compensatory damages and an additional $5million in punitive damages. Blake Lively's sister breaks silence after actress files a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin Baldoni Blake Lively was 'alarmed' that Justin Baldoni cast 'best friend' for intimate scene in It Ends With Us, says lawsuit The pregnant actress, currently residing in Spain, shared her perspective with NBC News, noting: "Social media is the absolute personification of the classic saying 'A lie travels halfway around the world before truth can get its boots on.' I saw this firsthand and up close. It's as horrifying as it is destructive." In the lawsuit, Blake claims he allowed his "friends" to watch her film certain sex scenes and added unapproved sexual scenes to the film. Justin, a married father of two, has refuted these allegations, labeling the lawsuit a "desperate attempt to 'fix' her negative reputation" following backlash over Blake's own conduct. The actress previously accused the film's director of sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment, and attempting to smear her reputation through a targeted social media campaign in an undated complaint submitted to the California Civil Rights Department. Blake had been embroiled in controversy over the promotion of her movie, receiving criticism from fans who deemed her "tone deaf" for overlooking the film's deeper themes of domestic abuse. In a widely shared social media post, she encouraged her followers: "Grab your friends, wear your florals, and head out to see it" a statement that some argued trivialized the film's serious content. Amidst the fallout, there were concerns for Blake's future in the industry. An insider confided to Daily Mail in August: "Blake is definitely saddened by the hate she is getting and is trying not to let it affect her, but it is." The insider continued, explaining Blake's disappointment and fears: "She thought this was her moment to shine, but is now looking at it like the end of her career. She's fearing no one will want to work with her after this. She really wants to continue producing and directing and acting, but she knows she needs to take a step back for a minute to reassess the future." In connection with the release of each of the five tranches of US$5 million, the Company will issue to OIC and the lenders under the US$60 million PIUS loan entered into in May 2023 ("Existing Noteholders"), penny warrants to purchase an aggregate number of shares equal to 5.0% of the Company's shares outstanding. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.9%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite climbed 1.3%. While Big Tech companies, including Apple, Amazon and chip company Broadcom helped push the market higher, the gains were widespread. Advancers outnumbered decliners by more than 3-to-1 on the New York Stock Exchange. Broadcom rose 3.2%, Apple gained 1.1% and Amazon closed 1.8% higher. Super Micro Computer climbed 6%. Tesla jumped 7.4% for the biggest gains among S&P 500 stocks. American Airlines shook off an early loss and ended with a 0.6% gain after the airline briefly grounded flights nationwide due to a technical issue. Elsewhere in the market, U.S. Steel rose 1.9% a day after an influential government panel failed to reach consensus on the possible national security risks of the nearly $15 billion proposed sale to Nippon Steel of Japan. NeueHealth surged 74.9% after the health care company agreed to be taken private in a deal valued at roughly $1.3 billion. All told, the S&P 500 rose 65.97 points to 6,040.04. The Dow added 390.08 points to 43,297.03, and the Nasdaq rose 266.24 points to 20,031.13. Treasury yields held steady in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury was little changed at 4.59%. European markets closed mostly higher. Markets in Asia mostly gained ground. Tuesday’s U.S. market rally comes as the stock market enters what’s historically been a very cheerful season. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. The so-called “Santa rally” also correlates closely with positive returns in January and the upcoming year. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the stock market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up 26.6% so far this year and remains within roughly 1% of the all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. U.S. markets will be closed Wednesday for Christmas. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to this week, including a weekly update on unemployment benefits on Thursday.

Economic recovery amid supply chain disruptionsQatar tribune Tribune News Network Doha Visit Qatar is gearing up to host a first-of-its-kind multi-activity village at Sealine Beach, developed in collaboration with key stakeholders including the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Qatar Sports for All, and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Taking place over three weeks from January 3 to 27, 2025, Visit Qatar’s Sealine Season will highlight Sealine Beach as an iconic destination, offering a vibrant range of family-friendly experiences and activities. The initiative aims to cater to all segments of the community, with activities spanning sports, entertainment, cultural displays, and engaging attractions. Commenting on the launch of Visit Qatar’s activations at Sealine Beach, Ahmed Hamad Al Binali, director of Festivals and Events at Visit Qatar, said: “Sealine Season represents a significant step in showcasing Qatar’s diverse offerings, blending its natural beauty with dynamic cultural experiences. This three-week initiative provides local and regional visitors with a distinctive and memorable experience.” Visit Qatar is working with several government entities to deliver a world-class experience, including, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, who will oversee the activation of sports competitions, including volleyball and football, and will manage a dedicated cultural area to highlight Qatar’s heritage. The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will provide space and will exhibit some oryxes. Issa Al Harami, director of the Sports Affairs Department at the Ministry of Sports and Youth, expressed his delight in supporting the Sealine Season activities, which provide comprehensive experience that combines sports and entertainment. He noted that these activations aim to foster interaction between the community and visitors through many innovative activities. Saleh Hassan Al Kuwari, director of the Natural Reserves Department at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, said the ministry’s participation in the Sealine Season activation, organised by Visit Qatar, underscores its efforts to advance local eco-tourism. This, according to him, includes offering unique recreational activities to attract visitors and raising awareness about the importance of preserving Qatar’s biodiversity to ensure its sustainability for future generations. Kuwari explained that the ministry has allocated a space within the Sealine Season to exhibit the Arabian Oryx, an iconic environmental and cultural symbol of Qatar. This initiative provides visitors with an authentic representation of the region’s wildlife, offering insights into Qatar’s natural environment and highlighting the state’s commitment to protecting endangered species. Sealine is renowned for its natural beauty, featuring towering sand dunes and extensive coastlines that make it a standout location for eco-tourism. Kuwari said Sealine’s distinctive environmental and geological features have fostered the development of a unique ecosystem, home to rare plant and animal species. These characteristics have earned the area the highest levels of environmental protection. He emphasised that Sealine is a prominent site for diverse mammal populations and is distinguished by its high sand dunes, which create a remarkable combination of geological formations and environmental attributes. Qatar Sports For All (QSFA) will facilitate community-based sporting activities aimed at promoting health and well-being, creating opportunities for all visitors to engage in physical activity. Abdulrahman bin Musallam Al Dosari, president of the QSFA, emphasised that the Federation’s participation in the Sealine Season activities reflects its commitment to social responsibility. During the mid-academic year break, the Federation focuses on delivering a diverse range of high-quality sports and recreational activities suitable for all ages. Biden converted the sentences of 37 federal death row inmates to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. The inmates include people who were convicted in the slayings of police, military officers and federal prisoners and guards. Others were involved in deadly robberies and drug deals. Three inmates will remain on federal death row: Dylann Roof , convicted of the 2015 racist slayings of nine Black members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina; the 2013 Boston Marathon Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev; and Robert Bowers, who fatally shot 11 congregants at Pittsburgh’s Tree of life Synagogue in 2018, the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S history. Opponents of the death penalty lauded Biden for a decision they'd long sought. Supporters of Donald Trump , a vocal advocate of expanding capital punishment, criticized the move as an assault to common decency just weeks before the president-elect takes office. Victims' families and former colleagues share relief and anger Donnie Oliverio, a retired Ohio police officer whose partner was killed by one of the men whose death sentence was commuted, said the execution of “the person who killed my police partner and best friend would have brought me no peace.” “The president has done what is right here,” Oliverio said in a statement also issued by the White House, “and what is consistent with the faith he and I share.” Heather Turner, whose mother, Donna Major, was killed in a bank robbery in South Carolina in 2017, called Biden's commutation of the killer's sentence a “clear gross abuse of power” in a Facebook post, adding that the weeks she spent sitting in court with the hope of justice were now “just a waste of time.” “At no point did the president consider the victims,” Turner wrote. “He, and his supporters, have blood on their hands.” Decision to leave Roof on death row met with conflicting emotions There has always been a broad range of opinions on what punishment Roof should face from the families of the nine people killed and the survivors of the massacre at the Mother Emanuel AME Church. Many forgave him, but they can’t forget and their forgiveness doesn’t mean they don’t want to see him put to death for what he did. Felicia Sanders survived the shooting shielding her granddaughter while watching Roof kill her son, Tywanza, and her aunt, Susie Jackson. Sanders brought her bullet-torn bloodstained Bible to his sentencing and said then she can’t even close her eyes to pray because Roof started firing during the closing prayer of Bible study that night. In a text message to her lawyer, Andy Savage, Sanders called Biden’s decision to not spare Roof’s life a wonderful Christmas gift. Michael Graham, whose sister, Cynthia Hurd, was killed, told The Associated Press that Roof’s lack of remorse and simmering white nationalism in the country means he is the kind of dangerous and evil person the death penalty is intended for. “This was a crime against a race of people," Graham said. “It didn’t matter who was there, only that they were Black.” But the Rev. Sharon Richer, who was Tywanza Sanders’ cousin and whose mother, Ethel Lance, was killed, criticized Biden for not sparing Roof and clearing out all of death row. She said every time Roof’s case comes up through numerous appeals it is like reliving the massacre all over again. “I need the President to understand that when you put a killer on death row, you also put their victims' families in limbo with the false promise that we must wait until there is an execution before we can begin to heal,” Richer said in a statement. Richer, a board member of Death Penalty Action, which seeks to abolish capital punishment, was driven to tears by conflicting emotions during a Zoom news conference Monday. “The families are left to be hostages for the years and years of appeals that are to come,” Richer said. “I’ve got to stay away from the news today. I’ve got to turn the TV off — because whose face am I going to see?” Biden is giving more attention to the three inmates he chose not to spare, something they all wanted as a part of what drove them to kill, said Abraham Bonowitz, Death Penalty Action’s executive director. “These three racists and terrorists who have been left on death row came to their crimes from political motivations. When Donald Trump gets to execute them what will really be happening is they will be given a global platform for their agenda of hatred,” Bonowitz said. One inmate's attorney expresses thanks — and his remorse Two of the men whose sentences were commuted were Norris Holder and Billie Jerome Allen, on death row for opening fire with assault rifles during a 1997 bank robbery in St. Louis, killing a guard, 46-year-old Richard Heflin. Holder’s attorney, Madeline Cohen, said in an email that Holder was sentenced to death by an all-white jury. She said his case “reflects many of the system’s flaws,” and thanked Biden for commuting his sentence. “Norris’ case exemplifies the racial bias and arbitrariness that led the President to commute federal death sentences,” Cohen said. “Norris has always been deeply remorseful for the pain his actions caused, and we hope this decision brings some measure of closure to Richard Heflin’s family.” ___ Swenson reported from Seattle. Associated Press writer Jim Salter in O'Fallon, Missouri, contributed to this report.
