The night before, Assad had even asked his close adviser Buthaina Shaaban to prepare a speech -- which the ousted leader never gave -- before flying from Damascus airport to Russia's Hmeimim air base in Syria , and from there out of the country. Assad left even "without telling... his close confidants in advance", a former aide told AFP, requesting anonymity for security reasons. "From the Russian base, a plane took him to Moscow." "His brother Maher," who commanded the Syrian army 's feared Fourth Brigade, "heard about it by chance while he was with his soldiers defending Damascus. He decided to take a helicopter and leave, apparently to Baghdad," added the former aide. All spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns. Leaderless When Islamist-led rebel forces launched their offensive in Syria's north on November 27, Assad was in Moscow, where his wife Asma has been treated for cancer. Two days later, when their son Hafez was defending his doctoral thesis at a Moscow university, the whole family were there, but not Bashar, according to a presidential palace official. On November 30, when Assad returned from Moscow, Syria's second city of Aleppo was no longer under his government's control. The following week, the rebels took Hama and Homs in quick succession, before eventually reaching the capital. Another palace official said he did not see Assad the day before Damascus fell last Sunday. "On Saturday Assad didn't meet with us. We knew he was there, but did not have a meeting with him," said the top official. "We were at the palace, there was no explanation, and it caused great confusion at the senior levels and on the ground," he said. "Actually, we had not seen him since the fall of Aleppo, which was very strange." During that fateful week, Assad called a meeting of the heads of Syria's intelligence services to reassure them. But the longtime leader did not show up, and "Aleppo's fall shocked us", said the same top palace official. Hama was next to fall into rebel hands. "On Thursday, I spoke at 11:30 am with troops in Hama who assured me the city was under lockdown and not even a mouse could make it in," an army colonel told AFP. "Two hours later they received the order not to fight, and to redeploy in Homs to the south," added the officer of the next strategic city sought by the rebels on their way to Damascus. "The soldiers were helpless, changing clothes, throwing away their weapons and trying to head home. Who gave the order? We don't know." The governor of Homs told a journalist that he had asked the army to resist. But no government forces defended the city. Delay On Saturday morning, someone in the halls of power in Damascus brought up the idea of Assad making a speech. "We started to set up the equipment. Everything was ready," said the first palace official. "Later on we were surprised to learn that the speech had been postponed, maybe to Sunday morning." According to him, top officials and aides were unaware that while this was happening, the Syrian army had already begun destroying its archives by setting them on fire. Still on Saturday, at around 9:00 pm (1800 GMT), "the president calls his political adviser Buthaina Shaaban to ask her to prepare a speech for him, and to present it to the political committee which is meant to meet on Sunday morning", said a senior official close to Assad. "At 10:00 pm she calls him back, but he no longer picks up the phone." That evening, Assad's media director Kamel Sakr told journalists: "The president is going to deliver a statement very soon." But then Sakr, too, stopped answering his phone, as did interior minister Mohammed al-Rahmoun. The palace official said he stayed in his office until 2:30 am on Sunday. Within less than four hours, the rebels were to announce that Assad was gone. "We were ready to receive a statement or a message from Assad at any moment," said the top palace official. "We could have never imagined such a scenario. We didn't even know whether the president was still at the palace." 'Everything was lost' At around midnight, the palace official had been told that Assad needed a cameraman for Sunday morning. "That reassured us that he was in fact still there," he said. But just before 2:00 am, an intelligence officer called to say all government officials and forces had left their offices and positions. "I was shocked. It was just the two of us in the office. The palace was almost empty, and we were totally confused," said the official. At 2:30 am he left the palace. In the city centre, "arriving at Umayyad Square, there were plenty of soldiers fleeing, looking for transportation," he said. "There were thousands of them, coming from the security compound, the defence ministry and other security branches. We found out that their superiors had ordered them to flee." The official said it was a "frightening" scene. "Tens of thousands of cars leaving Damascus, and even more people marching on the road on foot. It was that moment I realised everything was lost and that Damascus had fallen." (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has processed 15,547 crore transactions totalling Rs 223 lakh crore from January to November this year, as reported by the Finance Ministry on Saturday. In a social media post on X, the ministry highlighted the significant impact of UPI on financial transactions in India. Using the hashtag #FinMinYearReview2024, the ministry emphasized UPI's growing influence globally, noting its increasing adoption in various countries. India's digital payment revolution is gaining worldwide traction, with both UPI and RuPay making rapid strides internationally. Currently, UPI operates in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, and Mauritius. UPI, a digital payment system that enables instant money transfers between bank accounts, was launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and has since transformed India’s payment ecosystem by integrating multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application. This system has streamlined fund transfers, merchant payments, and peer-to-peer transactions, providing users with flexibility, such as scheduled payment requests. UPI has made financial transactions faster, more secure, and easier, empowering individuals, small businesses, and merchants, and supporting the nation's shift towards a cashless economy. In October 2024, UPI set a new record by processing 16.58 billion transactions, totaling Rs 23.49 lakh crore. This marked a 45% year-on-year increase from 11.40 billion transactions in October 2023, according to Ministry of Finance data. With 632 banks connected to its platform, this surge underscores UPI's growing dominance in India's payment sector. UPI has greatly benefited small businesses, street vendors, and migrant workers by providing an efficient way to transfer money and receive payments. The system's adoption accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic, as people sought safer, contactless alternatives to cash. UPI's success can be attributed not only to its robust infrastructure but also to a shift in consumer behavior. Trust in the system and its accessibility have played a crucial role in its widespread adoption. UPI’s expansion into France marks a significant milestone, as it is the first European country to adopt the system. This enables Indian consumers and businesses to make and receive payments seamlessly while abroad. Prime Minister Modi has actively advocated for UPI’s expansion within the BRICS group, now including six new members. This push is expected to strengthen remittance flows, promote financial inclusion, and enhance India's global financial standing. According to the ACI Worldwide Report 2024 cited by the Finance Ministry, India now accounts for approximately 49% of global real-time payment transactions as of 2023, reinforcing its leadership in digital payment innovation.Thailand's first robotic solar installer is expected to increase domestic demand for rooftop solar panels and promises a significant increase in revenue for developer Solar D Corporation, a solar power solution provider and the distributor of the Tesla Powerwall energy storage system. The new solar panel installation robot, reportedly the first of its kind in the country, will help drive revenue in 2025, with estimated year-on-year growth of 33% to 2 billion baht, said Sumrit Sitthiwaranuwong, chief executive of Solar D. The robot uses "LightSpeed" technology developed by the company's R&D team, setting up rooftop solar panels 10 times faster than manual work, he said. Usually solar panels with power generation capacity of 1 megawatt require 60 days for manual installation, but with the LightSpeed technology, the work is finished in only six days. Mr Sumrit said the robot should drive demand for rooftop solar panels in Thailand based on easier installation. The technology makes a job that is time-consuming, labour-intensive and prone to accidents much easier, he said. Businesses are increasingly installing rooftop solar panels because they do not want to depend solely on electricity purchased from the state grid, which is normally expensive, said Mr Sumrit. Many companies are also committed to using more clean energy as part of a campaign against global warming. The growing popularity of solar power usage is helping Solar D rack up revenue this year, projected to rise to 1.5 billion baht from only 200 million baht in 2020. Since its establishment in 2008, the company has installed solar panels with a combined capacity of more than 300MW. Chief commercial officer Santi Srichawla said the company plans to introduce the robot to customers in the commercial and industrial sectors as the installation work covers large areas. The new technology has received a positive response from customers, said Mr Santi. Solar D also offers after-sales service, with the robot providing maintenance work. Rooftop solar panels need to be frequently cleaned to remove dust that decreases power generation efficiency. The robot can carry out more than two cleanings a year, which were previously done by humans, he said. The LightSpeed technology should also lift the confidence of investors when the company raises funds to list on the stock market in 2026, said Mr Sumrit. "The listing will support our future investment in energy solutions, contributing to the sustainable development of the economy," he said.
, the real-time strategy adventure from , is set to launch out of early access this summer [Southern Hemisphere], after three years in development. To celebrate the achievement, a has debuted in the latest PC Gaming Show, revealing more of the game’s upcoming multiplayer features, and every other change for its full release. As detailed, will be significantly updated in the coming months, with 1.0 improvements including “full co-operative multiplayer, allowing two players to unite, strategise, and push back the encroaching darkness together.” In addition to co-op multiplayer, the game also features a vast campaign mode where you’ll attempt to survive against roaming hordes of enemies, doing everything in your power to defend your armies. Your journey is complicated by a range of novel features: there’s a day and night cycle that forces you to change up your strategy on the fly, there’s fear mechanics that must be overcome, and the game’s proprietary SwarmTech engine also allows for up to 70,000 enemies to assault you in waves. That’s a whole lot of chopping, and it’ll certainly keep you on your toes. It’s more likely you’ll fall in your quest to survive, but that’s how is built. You do your best, and then a new run begins, complete with new blessings and malices to shake up the action. In our early access preview of , we were enamoured by the game’s campaign mode – and we’re certainly keen to see how it’s evolved since then, and how co-op elements add to gameplay elsewhere. “The game’s defence loop is surprisingly complex, and even in the opening chapters of , it leaves room for plenty of creativity, as well as a hefty dose of failure,” we wrote. “The opening act of sports a measured balance between frustrating challenge and rewarding victory, encouraging more creative and tactical approaches with each attempt to survive. Wits and quick thinking are needed to hit every goal post in this more guided narrative, but thankfully, each death feels meaningful – and effectively pushes you onward.” When launches, players will be able to hop into this campaign once more, while also experimenting with that highly coveted co-op mode. Stay tuned for more on this upcoming 1.0 update, which is set to land this season.

The company was valued at $50 billion in a recent investment round, more than doubling its value from six months ago, as Bloomberg reports. The quick expansion is ascribed by analysts to heightened investor interest fueled by Musk's strong ties to Trump, who claims to prioritize technical innovation in his policies. Musk's endeavor into space technology, SpaceX, is likewise seeing a spike. This week, the firm had a high-profile launch event that was attended by President Elect Trump and is in discussion to hold a private share sale, which could boost the company's value to more than $250 billion. Musk's political influence is also increasing. He and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are set to run the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
